Dodgeball 101 Series: Dodge to Stay In
Dodging is the name of the game. But, as many quickly realize, this is easier said than done. Here are some tips to stay in the game!
- Spread out, stay back. – Don’t stand behind your teammate – that’s a common mistake made by many dodgeball amateurs is. If they dodge a ball, you won’t see it coming and you will be quickly and easily eliminated. However, if you see two opponents standing one behind the other, they should be your target! Also, remember to maximize your distance from your opponents.
- Jump! – Split jumps or jumps with high legs are your best bet. Most players are aiming between the thighs and shins, so a high jump will clear this safely. Only as a last resort should you duck, as this leaves you extremely vulnerable and should only be attempted in countering one-on-one situations
- Watch the court. – Don’t stray too close to the boundaries. Make sure you have room to dodge on both sides, and behind you. Remember – if you step on the marked boundary, which will be behind you, on both you’re left and right sides, and in front of you, you’ll be out.
- Spread out. – As the numbers on your team dwindle, keep equally spaced out. Don’t clump together, your team will just be a larger, easier, less mobile target.
