NEW REPORT MAKES FINANCIAL CASE FOR HOUSING AND SERVICES IN NH

New Hampshire social service organizations release case studies on high utilizers of the social service system.

MANCHESTER, NH – On September 20, 2016, the New Hampshire Coalition to End Homelessness released a report that aggregated case studies on frequent users of social service systems by the Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester, Families in Transition and New Horizons for NH.  This issue brief is meant to illustrate the complexities in adequately serving this high need population, the financial implications of not providing adequate care, and some possible solutions to the problem that have seen success in other areas of the country and that could be explored for implementation in Manchester.

“This interagency brief reveals a gap in the social services system in New Hampshire where those with high needs are falling through,” said Cathy Kuhn, Ph.D., Director of the NH Coalition to End Homelessness.  “Implementing proven and effective solutions that ensure those folks with the highest needs are receiving the most appropriate care will go a long way in reducing the number of frequent utilizers.”

The brief concludes with recommendations on reducing high utilizers, including implementing multi-disciplinary team of service providers, such as Community Care Teams, to manage complex cases, increasing supportive housing program, and expanding respite care options.
