New Hampshire Coalition to End Homelessness provides scholarship to homeless students: Up to three scholarships will be awarded

MANCHESTER, NH – New Hampshire Coalition to End Homelessness (NHCEH) has announced their 3rd annual “Hope Starts Here Scholarship Fund” for homeless or formerly homeless students. The scholarship fund was established to award students currently living in New Hampshire who have experienced homelessness during their school career, who have the desire to continue their education beyond high school, and who have demonstrated academic achievement. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2011.

The scholarship can be used to help defray the costs of college or post-secondary vocational training program tuition, fees, books, prep courses, or other educational expenses. Depending on the availability of funding, NHCEH anticipates up to three scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 will be awarded.

Donations for the “Hope Starts Here Scholarship Fund” have been largely provided by Goffstown High School’s National Honor Society, with additional donations being provided by New Hampshire Department of Education employees, Rochester School District, South Congregational Church of Concord, and private donors.

“Homelessness can be trying for anyone, but for students in high school it can be especially difficult,” said Lynda Thistle Elliott, Ed.D, of the NHCEH Board of Directors. “The Hope Starts Here Scholarship Fund rewards those students who have experienced homelessness and achieved academic success by providing a better opportunity to further their education.”

A committee representing educators, homeless providers and outreach workers, and other service agency providers will review the applications and make recommendations to the NHCEH Board of Directors, who will make the final selection and notify the recipient(s) of the award.

To apply, students must complete the application and follow the instructions. The application and instructions can be downloaded from the following links: Scholarship Announcement | Hope Starts Here Application.
