The New Hampshire Coalition to End Homelessness is trying to raise awareness and commitment among our political leaders of the need for action to end homelessness.
Recognizing the responsibility inherent in the unique access to Presidential candidates enjoyed by citizens of New Hampshire, a Board committee was tasked with developing a document containing ten actions that the next President can take to end homelessness. As the committee members began to develop early drafts and to tap into local political experts, three important points greatly influenced the development of the final draft. First, it became evident that there was no strategic reason to limit the focus of the document to only the Presidential candidates. After all, ending homelessness will require action at the national, state, county, and municipal levels of government. Second, it was pointed out that the document would make a stronger statement if focused at the level of New Hampshire, rather than in a more abstracted manner when looking at national policy issues. Third, the committee realized that the most important goal of the document was its call for leadership, and not to try to pigeon-hole a diverse group of politicians into the same policy statements. Thus, the final document calls for a general pledge to champion ending homelessness and lists ten areas of action for the champions to prioritize.
The CAMPAIGN 2008 - CHAMPION'S PLEDGE is now available for download.
This document is going to be used as part of a three-part implementation strategy. First, the NHCEH Executive Director will approach candidates directly and present them with an opportunity to take the Champion's Pledge. Second, a media campaign will publicize the Champion's Pledge. Third, volunteers will be organized to attend candidates' campaign events and to call for our political leaders to address homelessness.
